This is an original 1948 edition of The Wolfe Tone Annual, founded in 1932 by Irish republican writer and editor Brian O’Higgins. Published each year around the anniversary of Theobald Wolfe Tone’s death, the Annual combined poetry, historical essays, and commemorative material aimed at keeping alive the memory of the United Irishmen and the ideals of the 1798 Rebellion. Alongside its sister publication, the Wolfe Tone Weekly, the Annual played a role in shaping mid-century republican commemorative culture, including the yearly gatherings at Tone’s graveside in Bodenstown, County Kildare. This wartime-era issue offers collectors and historians a tangible primary source from a pivotal period in the history of Irish republican print culture.
