My father, Paddy (Patrick Joseph) McCarthy, who died in 1972, had a medal for service in ‘A1 (University College Cork) Company, 2nd Battalion, Cork I Brigade, Oglaigh na hEireann (IRA) during the three months which ended on 11th July, 1921. His familiy was from Skibbereen. He was a student of engineering at UCC at the time. Is there some way I can find out a bit more about his life during that period?
Go raibh maith agat.  Padraig McCarthy.

Le dea-mhein,

Regarding, Edmond and also Brenda Foster.
Edmond, a Patrick Mc Carthy commd IRA Cork made 2 statements to the Bureau of military history in Dublin, the numbers are 38 and 1163, email ( military.archives@defenceforces.ie )
to request those statements, may not be your kin but worth a shot it does not cost any money.
Other than that find the names of his comrades, one of them would have made a statement and I can provide you with a number, doing this will certainly get you results, just leave a post requesting a name and will get back to you.
Brenda on the same list is a Mrs Lily Curran officer of Cumann na mBan Dublin, number 805, request it from the above link and am sure may lead to some results also, by the way this may not be your kin also.
For both of you concerned the Bureau usually require a request by mail, but in recent times have agreed to this way of requests.
    Good luck in your search
    Fin
